Art: Ceramics/3D Design Tenure-Track Faculty

This position is a Full-Time, Tenure-Track, Parkland Academic Employees (PAE) appointment.
Salary is commensurate with experience. 

Full-time Faculty teach a full-time load as per the Parkland Academic Employees (PAE) bargaining agreement.  They advise and mentor students and participate in governance of their departments and the college. The Full-time Ceramics/3D faculty teaches a full range of Art studio courses which may include Ceramics, 3-D Foundations, and/or Sculpture, as well as the general education art courses.

Essential Job Functions:

• Teach Ceramic classes covering wheel throwing, hand construction, glazing and firing for high and low temperature clay at the beginning, intermediate and advanced level.
  
• Integrate history of ceramics, contemporary ceramics, and craft into coursework and project development.
  
• Teach Art General Education classes.
  
• Teach clay processes for utilitarian and sculptural expression.
  
• Be skilled in the use of throwing wheels, slab rollers, gas & electric kilns, glazes, and raw materials.
  
• Teach mold making, fabrication, some digital fabrication as well as modeling.
  
• Have skills in carving, welding, and other media.
  
• Loading and firing electric and gas kilns, mixing glazes.
  
• Maintain a clean healthy studio environment.
  
• Support other faculty in the ceramics studio as needed regarding monitoring the studio lab times.
  
• Knowledge and use of photographic equipment and techniques as applied to photographing ceramic and three-dimensional objects.
  
• Provides classroom instruction in accordance with the stated philosophy, objectives, and established course outlines of the college.
  
• Participate in learning outcomes development and assessment.
  
• Informs students of course regulations, evaluation procedures, and other information pertinent to the course: prepares a course syllabus for each course and distributes it early in each term.
  
• Is available for student advising/mentoring.
  
• Maintain regular office hours to ensure availability for student consultation. Provide assistance to students in a timely manner.
  
• Prepares and teaches courses to a diverse student population based on the department’s approved course learning outcomes, utilizing a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of students and the standards of the discipline.
  
• Maintains accurate scholastic records of students, submits required reports on students’ progress according to published deadlines.
  
• Is an active member of the department, college, and community through presence and participation in teaching and studio practices.
  

Minimum Requirements:   

• Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or Master of Arts (MA) in Studio Art with an emphasis in Ceramics or other three-dimensional art discipline OR master's degree in a closely related field with at least 18 credit hours in graduate ceramic courses.
  
• Demonstrated expertise in wheel-thrown and wheel-based ceramic techniques.
• Demonstrated expertise in ceramic hand-building/sculpture techniques.
• Demonstrated expertise in ceramic firing equipment and technology, theory, and methodology.
  
• Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and other members of the campus community.
  
• Ability to professionally engage in positive working relationships with members of the Parkland College community and members of the public.
  
• Maintains all professional credentials required to teach in discipline.
  
• Ability to learn the Parkland information system and new programs as technology changes.  
  
• Must successfully complete a criminal background check with fingerprinting.
• In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment.  This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
