About the Role
As an Environmental & Sustainability Manager at Zekelman Industries, located in Chicagoland area in IL, you will play a key role in supporting environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives across facilities in the United States and Canada. This position is responsible for ensuring adherence to environmental regulations, managing permitting requirements, and leading environmental programs that support operational excellence and sustainability goals.
You will collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, and external partners to implement environmental projects, support audits and inspections, and drive continuous improvement in environmental performance. This role also includes supervision of environmental team members across multiple sites.
This role is ideal for a technically strong environmental professional who thrives in a dynamic, multi-site manufacturing environment and is passionate about compliance, sustainability, and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Do
Support and manage environmental projects including air permitting, pollution control equipment, storm water, industrial process water, and waste management programs.
Conduct site audits, inspections, and fieldwork to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and company standards.
Develop improvement plans and coordinate environmental testing, sampling, and analysis activities.
Prepare technical documentation, internal reports, and external regulatory correspondence.
Coordinate and manage consultants and contractors to ensure compliance with project requirements and environmental standards.
Participate in technical meetings, prepare reports and presentations, and support regulatory inspections and communications.
Maintain environmental records, monitoring data, and compliance documentation to ensure accurate reporting.
Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to support continuous compliance of permitted systems.
Provide training and guidance on environmental compliance, pollution prevention, and sustainability practices.
Support environmental incident response activities, including spills and other emergencies.
Develop and support training programs and track completion through the learning management system.
Lead sustainability initiatives and implement waste reduction and cost-saving measures.
Lead and promote healthy and safe work practices as required by regulatory agencies and Company policy.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Who You Are
4–5 years of experience managing environmental and regulatory compliance in a manufacturing environment.
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of environmental regulations, including air emissions, hazardous waste, NPDES, and industrial water discharge.
Strong understanding of environmental monitoring, mitigation, and compliance practices.
Ability to analyze environmental data, perform calculations, and present findings effectively.
Experience working with environmental permitting, reporting, and regulatory agencies.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects across different locations.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work across teams and with external stakeholders.
Experience leading or supervising team members preferred.
Ability and willingness to travel to multiple facilities across the U.S. and Canada (25–50%).
Ability to maintain regular, full-time, predictable onsite attendance.

Below is the expected base salary range for this position. This is a good-faith estimate, and offers will be determined based on experience, education, skill set, and interview performance.
Base Salary Range: $91,670.00 - $126,175.00
Additional compensation may include:
