    The City of Urbana, Illinois is now offering the following incentives for all new, Entry-level Police Officers who begin employment between February 1, 2023 through June 30, 2025.

    • A bonus of $5,000 on your first paycheck!
    • A second bonus of $5,000 upon successful completion of probation


    Probationary Pay (effective July 1, 2024 through and including June 30, 2025):
    Without an associate's degree: $72,860.30
    With an associate's degree (or equivalent): $75,020.04

    The City of Urbana invites qualified applicants for the position of Entry-Level Police Officer. Officers perform police protection and other services to safeguard the lives, property, and constitutional rights of the citizens of Urbana. Duties include investigating complaints, disturbances, accidents, and reported criminal activities; testifying in court; training new police officers; responding to crime and accident scenes, emergency situations and other requests for assistance; detecting, apprehending and arresting criminals; enforcing the laws and ordinances of the City; and performing a variety of specialized duties as assigned.

    The Urbana Police Department provides a wide range of public service while carrying out the basic police mission through a Community Policing philosophy. The ideal candidate for this position will: be able to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others; possess excellent communication skills, including written, verbal and interpersonal skills; have a desire to help and serve others; demonstrate honesty and integrity; have close attention to detail; will be reliable, responsible, dependable and fulfill obligations; be able to tolerate highly stressful situations calmly and effectively; maintain composure and keep emotions in check, even in very difficult situations; be open to change (positive or negative) and to considerable variety in the workplace; and be understanding and helpful on the job. Successful candidates in this occupation will be comfortable following set procedures and routines, and a clear line of authority to follow; frequently working with, communicating with, and teaching people; helping or providing service to others; taking risks; leading others; and working with practical, hands-on problems and solutions.

    Minimum Qualifications include:
    • High school diploma or equivalent high school education
    • At least 21 years of age and not more than 34 years of age by exam date. You may exceed the age of 35 years by the number of years served on active military duty, but by no more than 10 years of active military duty or if you have previous police officer experience. (65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6)
    •U.S Citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.
    • Valid driver's license
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and a desire to help and serve others
    • Physically fit and ability to pass a medical and a physical agility exam. See the POWER Test handout for more details
    • Able to pass a psychological exam and background check

    You have three testing options; each uses the same test:

    1) You may test virtually, at home, through NTN. You will need to complete both a City of Urbana employment application for this position and an application through NTN.     2) You may test at any test location in the National Testing Network (NTN).     Names on the eligibility list are valid for two years. This test will add to the existing register, not replace it. P
