Position Overview

Are you ready to advance in your Emergency Communications/Dispatching career? METCAD 9-1-1 is looking for public safety and public service-oriented individuals to join our team as a Telecommunicator (Emergency Communications Dispatcher) II. This is a great opportunity to partner with first responders to provide public safety through quality service.

Job Responsibilities

Located in Urbana, IL, METCAD is a multi-jurisdictional emergency call center providing call taking and dispatch services for all of Champaign County. Telecommunicator IIs provide valuable service to our community by performing high-quality emergency call taking, dispatching, and other related duties using specialized technology including multi-screen computers with computer aided dispatch (CAD) software and radio consoles. Additionally, Telecommunicator IIs are a resource for Telecommunicator Is, user agency personnel, and Telecommunicator Supervisors. They provide new and ongoing training for team members; provide guidance and support to telecommunicators during active events; and receive, respond to, and communicate a variety of questions, issues, and updates in the absence of a Telecommunicator Supervisor. Telecommunicator IIs are regularly scheduled 12-hour shifts on an alternating week pattern of 2-2-3 (work 2, off 2, work 3) for an 84-hour pay period. Overtime may be assigned to complete minimum staffing requirements on a regular day off.

Required Qualifications

  • Education equivalent to a high school diploma. Completed coursework without a diploma will be considered.
  • Successful completion of training and probationary periods for Telecommunicator I or equivalent position. Equivalent experience may be defined as answering emergency calls for police, fire, and medical service; dispatching public safety units; utilizing computer aided dispatch (CAD) system, radios, and other equipment for emergency call taking and dispatching.
  • Ability to perform data entry at 35 net words per minute with 90% or higher accuracy.
  • Ability to perform essential functions that require physical ability as noted in the job description, with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to effectively utilize personal computers for web-based and other computer applications, such as LEADS, CAD, and 9-1-1 systems.
  • Ability to work any shift, including holidays and weekends, and overtime assignments.
  • The ability to obtain, within an approved timeframe and maintain for the duration of employment in the position, LEADS and Emergency Medical Dispatch certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional formal education, certification, training, or professional development in public safety, emergency communications, or a related area.
  • Experience providing feedback to co-workers or subordinates.
  • Experience leading or training others.
  • Telecommunicator or equivalent position, as defined under Required Qualifications above, experience at a multi-discipline, multi-jurisdictional emergency call center.

Drug screening, psychological evaluation, hearing test, criminal background check, and sit-along job preview will be required. The base salary range is $31.1696 - $37.9677 per hour, DOQ, plus an excellent fringe benefits package. Applications must be submitted online no later than Sunday, March 15, 2026.
