Description

The City of Champaign is looking for motivated, customer-service focused, and conscientious individuals to create a welcoming environment for residents and visitors to our community as a Parking Enforcement Officer I in the Public Works Department. This position is a great first step opportunity to a fulfilling and rewarding career in public service.

Responsibilities of Position

Parking management is integral to supporting the vitality of our community, and parking enforcement facilitates movement and availability of parking spaces in downtown, midtown, and campustown encouraging economic activity to support businesses and other amenities. As a Parking Enforcement Officer, you will have frequent in-person interactions with residents and visitors to provide directions, respond to questions on a variety of City services, and explain parking options and regulations. You will monitor parking areas for compliance and safety and issue violation notices as needed. The schedule for this position is 12:00 noon – 9:00 pm, Monday – Friday, with occasional after-hours routine work. Additional responsibilities include participating in City snow and ice and other emergency response operations, including working up to 16-hour shifts at all hours of the day and night.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent. Completed coursework without a diploma will be considered.
• Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
• Ability to perform essential functions that require physical agility, including making the rounds of a one-mile radius before returning to the vehicle, as noted in the job description, with or without accommodation.
• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to work emergency operations and/or enforcement activities outside of regular work hours.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Ability to use a personal computer and mobile devices to perform data entry, auditing, word processing, and email communications.

Preferred Qualifications

• High volume, face to face customer service experience.
• Snow removal experience.
• Experience working independently with little supervision.
• Experience explaining or enforcing rules, regulations, or policies.

Drug screening will be required. The starting salary is $25.41 per hour, plus an excellent fringe benefits package. Applications must be submitted online no later than Sunday, September 14, 2025.
