Responsibilities of Position
The Environmental Inspector is part of a team dedicated to improving the livability of the Champaign community. Their role is to inspect the exteriors of existing properties to determine compliance with applicable codes and standards in areas such as grass and weed height, overgrown vegetation, no garbage service, junk/trash or debris, inoperative motor vehicles, peeling paint/deteriorated exterior surfaces, and more. They work with tenants, landlords, and property owners to resolve violations, engage with residents in education outreach activities, make presentations to various organizations, and serve on the Code Review Committee. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent. Completed coursework without a diploma or certificate will be considered.
• Experience providing excellent customer service.
• Any equivalent combination of work experience and education that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Valid state-issued driver’s license and good driving record.
• The ability to work outdoors in all types of weather.
• Effective oral and written communication and time management skills.Preferred Qualifications
• Ability to interpret and apply municipal ordinances, codes, and standards.
• Experience providing direct customer service.
• Experience in investigative fields, property maintenance inspections or building inspections.
• Ability to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or other mapping technologies.
• Basic knowledge and understanding of legal lot descriptions.
• Ability to use computers, tablets, and mobile devices for data entry, email, word processing and calendaring. Ability to prioritize a daily schedule and workload.Drug screening, driving abstract, and criminal background check will be required. The starting salary is $34.9214 per hour, plus an excellent fringe benefits package. Applications must be submitted online no later than Sunday, July 13, 2025.
