If this is you, then consider applying to be an Engineering Technician II with the Engineering Division of the City of Champaign Public Works Department.
Responsibilities of Position
The Engineering Technician II is part of a team dedicated to ensuring the protection and preservation of City infrastructure through the administration of the City’s construction permit program. They perform a combination of administrative work in the office and inspection work in the field. They review plans, specifications, and permit applications for work in the ROW, driveways, sidewalks, and other areas covered by construction permits for completeness and compliance with applicable codes and other regulatory requirements. They calculate, assess, and collect permit and other required fees. They perform scheduled and unscheduled site checks and inspections, document non-compliance, and work with permittees to achieve compliance. The Engineering Technician II provides internal and external customer service and assistance, maintains paper and electronic records/files, and prepares a variety of scheduled and ad-hoc activity and progress reports. They also assist with Public Works Department emergency response activities which may include working up to 16-hour rotating shifts with little or no advance notice.
Required Qualifications
• Associate or technical degree in Construction, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
• Practical work experience in roadway construction and maintenance, ROW maintenance, pipeline maintenance, or construction site monitoring or inspections.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities will be considered.
• Knowledge of practices, techniques, materials, and equipment related to public infrastructure and public improvement construction and maintenance.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Ability to review construction plans, specifications, and supporting documentation.
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced education, training, or certification related to areas of assignment.
• Experience with construction permitting (e.g., applications, review/issuance, fees, etc.).
• Experience with construction observation or inspection.Drug screening, driving abstract, and criminal background check will be required. The starting hourly salary is $36.78 per hour, plus an excellent fringe benefits package. Applications must be submitted online no later than Sunday, June 8, 2025.
