MTD is searching for our next Technician Apprentice.

The Technician Apprentice will attend Parkland College, expenses paid, to obtain the Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair certificate while working part-time at MTD.

The apprentice is responsible for training with other MTD technicians to learn the fundamentals of mechanical repair to ensure vehicles remain in factory specification and are safe for public service while taking courses and remaining in good academic standing at Parkland College. This is a part-time paid apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship Details:

  • Attend Parkland College and successfully complete the required courses to obtain the Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair Certificate. All courses, fees, and books within the outlined certificate program will be paid for by MTD. Coursework must be completed within two semesters and apprentice must remain in good academic standing maintaining a minimum of 2.75 GPA.
  • Work a minimum of 20-25 hours during the periods when attending Parkland College and 40 hours/week when Parkland is not in session. Apprentice may choose to work more hours up to and including 40 hours during the semesters when attending Parkland.
  • Be paid at the internship wage rate until certification is obtained through Parkland College.
  • Be hired as a full-time Technician at MTD at the regular technician hourly wage rate once Parkland College certification is obtained.
  • Sign an agreement to work as an MTD Technician for two years past the certification.

Education Requirements

  • Must attend Parkland and obtain an Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair Certificate.
  • Must qualify for in-district tuition at Parkland College.
  • Must meet the prerequisites for all coursework within the Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair Certificate based on either High School transcripts or qualifying assessment tests.

Experience Requirements

  • Must be able to communicate, work independently, multi-task, and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Register, attend, and complete required Parkland courses to obtain an Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair Certificate.
  • Adhere to MTD’s Attendance Policy and other policies and procedures while also obtaining their Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair Certificate.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections with a trainer.
  • Repair and replace vehicle components such as water pumps, generators, tires, air compressors, steering components, batteries, seat cushions/inserts, fluids/filters, and others as assigned with a trainer.
  • Diagnose all electrical and mechanical issues in hybrid, A/C and heating, steering and suspension, air brake, diesel engine, and other related systems with a trainer.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.
  • Maintain and wear all required personal protective equipment in the manner recommended by the manufacturer and OSHA.
  • Coordinate work assignments and completion of duties with coworkers.
  • Complete an accurate and thorough documentation of work performed daily.

Other Information

A toolbox or tool cart and minimal entry tools will be supplied during the apprenticeship. Once the apprentice is hired as a Technician, tools will need to be acquired by the employee. A list of tools and a tool allowance is provided to Technicians.

Physical Demands

Employee must be able to use a variety of equipment and tools for up to 8 hours per day, up to 5 days per week. Physical requirements include stooping, kneeling, bending, standing, squatting/crouching, crawling/kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing and descending ladders and stairs, reaching above shoulders, and lifting and transporting heavy objects such as equipment, tools, and parts. Position requires long periods of standing and frequent walking; ability to talk and hear; use vision to read printed materials, computer screen, and to use equipment and tools properly; arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate tools and equipment and to access information.

This is considered a Medium-Work position, and employee must exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force to constantly move objects. Employee must possess the ability to move heavier weights as needed with assistance and/or the proper equipment.

Work Environment

Position involves working in maintenance garage / shop and outdoor settings, including on buses. Noise levels are moderate to loud and may require hearing protection. Employee will work in controlled temperature settings, hot or cold temperatures, or in inclement weather. Employee will be subject to air and noise pollutants, chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, high voltage, compressed air, vehicle contaminants, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. There are frequent interruptions to workflow and an expectation to hold and attend meetings on a regular basis.

Additional Information

  • Work shifts vary from day to night, as needed. MTD operates seven days a week, including weekends and holidays, and this position may require some work outside of traditional business hours.
  • All MTD employees are trained on the Management System Policy and the impacts associated with this position.
  • Applicant must pass a pre-employment background check, physical, and drug and alcohol testing.
  • Applicant must be able to obtain and maintain a DOT Medical Card.
  • The employee will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment and is required to comply with MTD’s Drug & Alcohol Policy which includes being cannabis-free in all safety-sensitive positions.

Pay rate: $18.00/per hour ~ effective 07/01/2025
