MTD is looking for a new Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Intern!
The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Intern will assist with programming, data gathering, website updates, publicity, and other tasks necessary for the Safe Routes to School and the Operations Department. This position reports to the C-U SRTS Project Co-Chair(s). This is a paid internship.
Education Requirements
A minimum of one year of college, preferably in planning, geography, engineering, or a related field is required.
Experience Requirements
Competency in Microsoft Office programs, basic database programs, and ArcGIS software—classroom experience with Adobe Creative Suite is preferred.

Responsibilities
- Facilitating Walking School Bus programs at two elementary schools
- Conducting a community-wide multi-media campaign on safety issues to include school zone safety, general pedestrian and bike safety, and encouragement for all roadway users to share the road by following the rules of the road
- Teaching pedestrian skills through events like International Walk 'n Roll to School Day, teaching safe bicycling skills through events like Bike to School Day and providing educational materials and activities at school open houses, PTA events, and health and wellness fairs
- Co-hosting educational programs with local park districts and schools by providing after-school classes on bicycling
- Encouraging snow removal on sidewalks around schools by working with schools, PTAs, the City of Urbana, utilizing billboards, bus boards, radio ads, yard signs, flyers, and postcards
- Raising general community awareness on the benefits of walking and biking to school
- Conducting Automatic Passenger Counter validations to improve accuracy of ridership data
- Completing additional tasks as assigned

Physical Demands
The exertion level required for this position is generally considered light work. Physical requirements include stooping, bending, standing, squatting/crouching, pushing/pulling, and reaching above shoulders. While performing the duties of this job, employees are often required to sit, with regular periods of walking and standing; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms; use vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally or a up to 10 lbs. of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
Work Environment
The work environment involves exposure to conditions generally found in an office setting within a shared workspace. The noise level is quiet to moderate. There are frequent interruptions to this position’s workflow with moderate foot traffic. There is an expectation to hold and attend meetings on a regular basis.
