SUMMARY

The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for instructing safe, effective group fitness classes. This is a part-time, year-round position.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Instructor must be 18 years or older and possess knowledge of all areas of group fitness classes
  • Ability to travel to various locations in Champaign and Savoy
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must be able to work on own without direction
  • Must be able to handle complaints and concerns from participants and professionally respond to their comments
  • Ability to teach and lead all classes to the ability of the population, not your own

SUPERVISION

The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible directly to the Head Group Fitness Instructor and/or Facility Manager


TRAINING CAN BE OBTAINED THROUGH CHAMPAIGN PARK DISTRICT

  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification through American Heart Association or accredited agency
  • Bloodborne pathogen training
  • Concussion training through the Center for Disease Control
  • Facility training
  • Anyone who will be driving a Champaign Park District vehicle will need to complete and pass a driving test from one of our certified Champaign Park District trainers
  • Mandated reporter certification
  • Prefer that applicant be certified as a Group Instructor Leader through AFAA, ACE, or other organization, or willing to attend training

CLASSIFICATION

  • Non-Exempt, hourly
  • Part-time or seasonal position

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Follow all Champaign Park District safety policies and perform all work in a manner that ensures the safety of the public, fellow employees, and themselves
  • Demonstrate proper exercise and cueing techniques; create choreography for multi-level fitness classes that challenge beginners through advanced exercisers and provide modifications as needed; build patterns logically and create smooth transitions
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of anatomy, kinesiology and physiology, and is able to apply it to classes and participants
  • Provide and wear appropriate fitness attire that falls within the CPD dress code
  • Make an effort to know participants names and meet their needs in order to retain them in class
  • Follow daily procedures: Read notices, verify participants, track attendance and distribute participant evaluations
  • Be a team player: Promote other classes, make necessary announcements, and substitute for other classes
  • Select appropriate music for class that does not contain inappropriate or offensive lyrics.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety procedures and techniques, including safe exercise techniques, and safe use of all equipment.
  • Make sure class is safe for all participants and modify as necessary for participants with unique needs
  • Continue education and training in exercise and group fitness
  • Make sure equipment is put away in its proper storage area after each class. Report any equipment needs to supervisor, including equipment that needs to be replaced, repaired or cleaned
  • Present ideas on how to improve the fitness program to the supervisor
  • Communicate effectively with participants, other staff and supervisor
  • Enforce and adhere to Champaign Park District policies and procedures
  • Work as scheduled to complete all duties assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Attend staff meetings and workshops
  • Implement emergency procedures for injuries, tornadoes and fire
  • Assist in opening and closing procedures of the fitness room and/or building
  • Assist with fitness and wellness special events
  • Assist with daily facility upkeep

PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Must be able to work under stressful conditions if CPR and/or first aid treatment is required

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Must be able to demonstrate various exercise techniques

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Must be able to work in a temperature-controlled room
  • Must be able to withstand heat or cold conditions
  • Must be able to work in artificial lighting

COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS

  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal skills
  • Must possess good safety awareness and judgment
  • Must have extensive knowledge of all Champaign Park District rules and regulations
