    Job Title: Maintenance Worker (Full-Time, Non-Exempt)
    Department: Physical Plant
    Reports To: Building & Grounds Manager

    SUMMARY
    Perform routine and extensive preventative maintenance and repair procedures on County buildings, mechanical equipment and utility systems.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    Include but are not limited to as other duties may be assigned.
    • Perform minor and major repairs of all buildings and equipment.
    • Preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment on a scheduled basis; inspect belts, check fluid levels, replace filters, grease bearings, seals, repair or replace broken parts, etc....
    • Complete daily, weekly, and monthly checklists on building equipment maintenance procedures and maintain records of scheduled maintenance procedures.
    • Clean and inspect boilers, treat water with proper chemicals.
    • Calibrate and repair pneumatic systems.
    • Replace broken windows, repair doors, door locks, and closets; install window blinds.
    • Install electrical wiring and equipment; new electrical services, wiring during remodel projects; replaces and repairs wiring as needed.
    • Repairs electrical equipment and controls circuits; replaces faulty electrical switches; repairs refrigeration equipment.
    • Performs electrical lock and control panel repairs to effectively maintain building security.
    • Assist with renovation/remodeling of buildings, repair plaster and drywall, paint building structures.
    • Perform outside custodial duties such as clean and sweep litter, remove snow and ice from building walkways and stairs.
    • Plant grass, flowers, trees and shrubs. Prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth.
    • Cut lawn using hands, power, or riding mower; trim edges around walks, flower beds, walls, etc... Spray lawns, trees and shrubs with fertilizers and insecticides.
    • Respond to emergency maintenance requests as required.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
    Education and/or Experience
    • High School Diploma or General Education degree (GED).
    • One year of responsible experience in building and mechanical equipment, maintenance and repair.
    • Acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Good skills in the use of hand and power tools.
    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
    • Must possess a valid Illinois Driver's License
    Language Skills
    • Ability to read and comprehend simple instruction, short correspondence, and memos.
    • Ability to write simple correspondence.
    • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
    Mathematical Skills
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and interpret miscellaneous drawings and schematics
    Physical Demands
    • Ability to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb; balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; crawl, talk; and hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, ability to differentiate between color, and depth perception.
    • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT
    While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.
    • The employee is occasionally exposed to:
      • Wet and/or humid conditions.
      • High precarious places.
      • Fumes or airborne particles.
      • Toxic or caustic chemicals.
      • Outside weather conditions.
      • Risk of electrical shock.
      • Vibration.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally loud.

    COMPENSATION
    • Wage Range: $19.48 – $27.51 per hour depending on qualifications.
    • The County offers a competitive benefits package, which is outlined on the Champaign County website, including membership in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), optional 457 deferred compensation plans, and a comprehensive health insurance plan.
    • This is a full-time union position under the Agreement set by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Union Contract.
