Your Role:
We are seeking a scientist with experience in wet chemistry or aerosol products within the manufacturing industry. This is an entry-level position focused on batching haircare products and testing stability samples.
The ideal candidate is organized, self-motivated, and capable of working independently to support the needs of the lab and ongoing projects. They should be able to follow procedures accurately and efficiently, collaborate effectively with a team, and maintain positive working relationships with other staff members.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Support the development of new personal care products through formulation, research, wet chemistry, stability testing, and troubleshooting.
- Independently batch personal care formulations with limited supervision.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and efficiency.
- Strictly follow cGMP guidelines and all necessary safety protocols.
- Keep the R&D lab clean, organized, and well-maintained.
- Maintain a detailed and well-organized laboratory notebook to document experiments and observations.
- Plan daily tasks and prioritize projects to meet deadlines and project goals.
- Learn and apply knowledge of skin and hair care technologies such as surfactant systems, gels, emulsions, and serums to create cosmetic formulations.
- Understand and evaluate the processing methods and functional performance of these technologies.
- Be familiar with—or be willing to quickly learn—the safe handling and filling of aerosol products.
- Learn about the various components of aerosol packaging (e.g., cans, valves, actuators, concentrates) and how they work together to deliver the final product.
- Research formulations using supplier information, scientific literature, and online resources.
- Monitor the stability of experimental formulas over 3 months at various temperatures (25°C, 4°C, 43°C, 38°C, and 50°C) to assess product shelf life.
- Report any stability issues or risks to the R&D Lead and fellow chemists.
- Communicate with raw material suppliers to discover new ingredients, clarify technical data, confirm availability, and support the needs of QC and purchasing teams.
- Understand and interpret technical specifications for both liquid and aerosol products, including pH, viscosity, specific gravity, total solids, crimp depth and diameter, total delivery, residual content, stem height, and more.
SKILLS, ABILITIES and EDUCATION:
Industry Experience:
Minimum of 1 year of hands-on experience in the personal care or aerosol industry, including batching formulations and working with products containing surfactant systems, emulsions, and polymer technologies.
Technical Knowledge:
Strong foundation in chemistry with a solid understanding of basic chemical principles relevant to personal care formulation.
Communication Skills:
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to clearly communicate technical issues, concerns, and observations to team members and management.
Innovation & Initiative:
A creative and self-driven individual who can think critically, solve problems independently, and bring innovative ideas to product development.
Education Requirements:
- An AS or BS in Chemistry, Biology or Cosmetic Science or related field.
COMPENSATION:
The salary range for this role considers a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; and other business and organizational needs. Compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the expected annual salary for this role is up to $70,000 USD.
