Process Development & Safety Engineer

APL Engineered Materials, Inc. manufactures specialty inorganic solid chemicals for use in conventional lighting, radiation detection and energy-related applications. We have an exciting opportunity for a Process Development & Safety Engineer in Urbana, Illinois. Please note this position is not eligible for visa sponsorship, including H-1B.

About the Role:
APL is looking for a hands-on engineer to lead process development and scale-up projects while taking full ownership of all safety programs in the facility. This includes maintaining safety records, conducting inspections, and ensuring reporting requirements. This role is ideal for an experienced Engineer or a PhD-level candidate with relevant industrial experience. The ideal candidate is someone who thrives solving technical challenges while creating a safe, high-performing workplace.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead process development projects from lab to production scale, optimizing for efficiency, quality, and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and implement process improvements.
  • Take full ownership of safety programs, including OSHA 300 logs, incident reporting, and monthly inspections.
  • Identify, evaluate, and mitigate process and operational hazards.
  • Develop and update safety procedures and training for employees.
  • Collaborate with production and R&D teams to integrate safe and practical improvements.

Qualifications:

  • Engineer or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field (Master’s with strong experience considered).
  • Proven experience in process development, scale-up, or process optimization.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial safety programs, reporting, and compliance.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
