Assistant Professor in Applied Grassland Ecology (NRES)

Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (https://nres.illinois.edu) is seeking qualified applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track faculty position as an Assistant Professor in Applied Grassland Ecology with a 40% Extension appointment.

We are seeking candidates who will develop a nationally recognized research and Extension program focused on applied grassland ecology. Candidates with expertise relevant to native prairie restorations, grasslands enrolled in CRP and other conservation programs, pollinator habitat, grassland ecosystem services, and climate change adaptation are encouraged to apply. Candidates with experience in interdisciplinary collaborations that span the natural, physical, and social sciences, and candidates who can show expertise in linking disciplines within NRES, will be reviewed favorably. The Extension component of this position (40% appointment) is critical, and the successful candidate will engage diverse stakeholders, build collaborations throughout Illinois, and contribute to the University of Illinois Extension program in Natural Resources, Environment, and Energy. Experience translating research into education and outreach materials is preferred. The candidate should also demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentoring students. A Ph.D. in an appropriate field is required.

The successful applicant will be expected to secure extramural funding, recruit, and mentor graduate students, publish regularly in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals, contribute to the mission of the University of Illinois Extension program, and teach and advise at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Due to the Extension appointment for this position, the candidate will have a reduced teaching load of one course per year. Teaching responsibilities will include a new course on grassland ecology and management. The anticipated start date is August 16, 2024, but this is flexible. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
