Landscape Architecture

The Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign invites applications for a full-time, tenure-stream position in Landscape Engineering and Construction. Appointment at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Processor will be considered based on each candidate’s record of accomplishments in research, teaching, and/or practice. The salary for this position will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full benefits-eligible position. The expected start date is August 16, 2024.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will undertake innovative research in integrative material, physical, and technical processes of landscape engineering and construction. They will teach core and elective studio-based, technical, and lecture/seminar-format courses in our BLA and MLA professional programs as well as our recently established MSUD program and, when qualified, our Ph.D. in Landscape Architecture program. Supervision of student research and appropriate levels of faculty service are also part of the position. The successful applicant will join other faculty members in fulfilling our Department’s newly revised mission statement and broader college and university missions with a focus on diversity, equity, sustainability, and justice.

Qualifications

Requirements include a terminal degree (e.g., master-level, Ph.D., D.Des.) in Landscape Architecture or a related field. Depending on the rank sought, applicants should demonstrate an outstanding record of scholarship and teaching in the areas of integrative material, physical, and technical processes of landscape engineering and construction or clear promise to build such a record.

Additional preferred qualifications include 1) knowledge of contemporary theories and innovative practices of landscape engineering design and construction and experience with, or a strong agenda for, those theories and practices; 2) technical knowledge of landscape engineering, site analysis techniques, material practices, and/or landscape construction practice; 3) experience in prototyping, modeling, and/or constructing sites and landscapes through professional practice and/or academic design/build projects; 4) experience in interdisciplinary collaboration (practice and/or research-based) with engineers, scientists, allied design disciplines, and others; 5) interest in advancing research and teaching of landscape engineering and construction in the context of climate change adaptation, urban infrastructure and public works, and/or engaged community design; 6) demonstrated interest in advancing design research and teaching on technical design, engineering, and construction subtopics such as landscape materials and re-use, decarbonization and sequestration, coastal and/or inland topographies, post-disaster recovery and resilience design, soils regeneration, novel landscape regulations and codes, construction labor and maintenance practices, and other conditions, processes, and questions affecting the critical making, re-making, and constructing of landscapes; and/or 7) practice-based experience, professional licensure, and/or potential to become licensed.
